Kelli Marie Author Interview

February 23, 2018

It is always nice to connect and learn about other Indie Authors.  I recently reached out to Kelli Marie the Author of Mystic Princess and she was nice enough to answer some interview questions.  Here is just a little bit about Kelli.

Did you ever think you would be unable to finish your first novel?

For sure. About half way through writing Mystic Princess I lost my grandma, my family moved across country and I got a new job. It was a lot of changes in a very short period of time. There was about a three to four month gap where I didn’t write at all. During that time I felt like I would never pick it back up again. But, when all the dust settled I was able to sit down and the writing just flowed out of me. I’m so glad that I was able to pick up where I left off.

Who is the most supportive of your writing in your family?

I can’t pick just one person for this one. So I would have to say my husband, Nick, my parents and my sister. They have all supported me through the whole process. My sister read Mystic Princess as I was writing and gave input when she could.

Do you have a day job other than being a writer? And do you like it?

I do. I have a Master’s degree in Social Work that I try to utilize in my writing. If you notice I weaved a lot of domestic violence elements into some of the relationships of the characters. I currently work at a Crisis Center where I answer a 24/7 hotline that helps those in need dealing with crisis, suicide or substance abuse.

What is your motivation for writing more?

Growing up, reading was always an escape for me. Whenever something bad or stressful happening in my life I would escape to my books and everything would be okay for a while. I want to be that escape for others. I want others to read my books and be able to escape even it’s just for a little while. I want to help people just as others have helped me.

What is your take on the importance of a good cover and title?

So important. As much as we say, “don’t judge a book by its cover” everyone does it. A cover can make or break you and is well worth the money to have it designed. My cover was designed by and they do wonderful work. I told them just a few things about my book and they came up with what you see today. I was thoroughly impressed and glad I took the time and money to get it down.

I read that you are a Star Wars Fan.  What is your favorite Star Wars series and why?

I am purist when it comes to Star Wars. I enjoy the original trilogy and the prequels. These new movies that are coming out are not Star Wars. I have read most of the Expanded Universe and the fact that these movies don’t consider these books canon anymore is heartbreaking. My favorite book series in the Star Wars Universe is the New Jedi Order and the Jedi Apprentice Series.

Also, should you watch them 1,2,3… or 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3….?

It depends on my mood. I would say usually I watch them in numerical order. However if it is your first time watching them I would watch them by the release date (4,5,6,1,2,3).

What has been your most successful avenue to get reviews on Amazon?

I have found some authors on FaceBook that do a review swap. I will read their book and review and they will read mine and do the same. This has helped boost some of my reviews. I have to say though getting reviews is probably one of the hardest things. I get a lot of great verbal feedback but getting that feedback online is a bit harder.

Are you fully self-published, or do you have an agent?

I am fully self-published. I think down the road once I get some more books out I will get an agent but for now I’m flying solo.

Do you re-read books or do only read a book once?

I love re-reading books! You get to see so many different things when books are re-read. One of my favorite books to re-read is the Giver by Lois Lowry. Every time I read that book the ending is different depending on what is going on in my life. I also love reading the Covenant Series by Jennifer Armentrout. That is series is absolutely amazing and I just love it. I read it again about every six months or so.

What inspired you to write Mystic Princess?

Mystic Princess actually came to me one morning while I was driving home from work. At one of my jobs at the time I worked with pregnant and parenting teens. The girls would talk to me about how they loved it when their boyfriends got jealous and how they picked fights on purpose to “spice” up the relationship. It became clear that some girls may have a skewed view of what a healthy vs unhealthy relationship might be. So out of this the main characters were born. If you play close attention I weave in many elements of domestic violence and examples of unhealthy      relationships because my hope was that through this book some girls   would see that these types of relationships are not okay.

When is the next book in the series coming out?

Unfortunately, I do not have an answer for this one at this time. I am hoping for the end of the year. We are currently having to move again unexpectedly so I have to put writing on hold for a bit, which has set me back. I will for sure keep people updated on the release on my webpage and on
